Overview

Do you hike but want to build your confidence? Do you rely on others to map read and navigate?  Do you avoid going into the hills when it is cloudy or the weather may deteriorate? Do you choose your walking route based on the presence of a path?

Gain knowledge and skills to unlock new walking potential with Glenmore Lodge, Scotland’s National Outdoor Training Centre.  Booking a 2 day course with one of our friendly, supportive and experienced instructors will unlock all sorts of future adventures for you.

Glenmore Lodge is based just 10 minutes from Aviemore, close to the famous Loch Morlich and with access to many hills, Munros and endless hiking choices.  The route for each day will be influenced by the group.  Choose to stay in one of our en-suite bedrooms, with hearty home cooked meals and an on-site bar.

AIMS

We will equip you with the skills required for confident and competent hill walking in the UK mountains under summer and autumn conditions, as well as 2 wonderful days of memories.

PRE-REQUISITES

A suitable level of physical fitness for 2 days hill walking. If you have any concerns, then do call the team here for a chat to talk through any worries.  We’re sure we’ll be able to put your mind at rest.

CONTENT

  • Navigation skills including the use of map, compass and electronic devices
  • Informed decision making in producing practical and achievable route plans
  • Understanding of mountain weather
  • Dealing with an emergency and understanding the role of mountain rescue
  • Planning to avoid water hazards and how to deal with them on the hill
  • What clothing & equipment to take and how to use it.

WHAT WILL I NEED

YOU WILL NEED (Glenmore Lodge can provide if required)

  • Waterproof jackets and trouser
  • Insulated synthetic jacket
  • Appropriate footwear for the attended course
  • Gaiters
  • 40lt rucksack
  • Walking poles

 EQUIPMENT YOU NEED TO BRING WHICH WE DO NOT HAVE IN THE STORES

  • Personal clothing
  • Warm outdoor wear
  • Insulating layers
  • Trekking / climbing trousers (not cotton)
  • Hat & gloves
  • Compass (if you have one)
  • Waterproof map case (maps and map cases are not a stores item but can be purchased from our shop)
  • Rucksack liner (or sturdy bin liner) / dry bags
  •  Hydration system (water bottle)
  • Box or bag for packed lunch
  • Personal first aid kit
  •  Personal toiletries & medications (towels are provided)
  • Suncream, sun hat, sunglasses
  • Watch with stopwatch facility
