Overview

Wild camping opens up a whole new world of possibilities in the mountains. If you’ve always dreamt of spending the night under the stars or accessing more remote parts of our wild land then this course will help you fulfil those dreams. You don’t need any previous wild camping experience however some hill walking experience is desirable.

AIMS

Develop the skills to plan and execute a comfortable camping trip in the UK Mountains alongside in-depth understanding of the environment and how to camp responsibly.

PRE-REQUISITES

You don’t need any previous wild camping experience however some hill walking experience is desirable.

CONTENT

You will learn from the experts on what are (or not) the essential items that need to be carried on a remote and wild camping trip, how to pack and carry it all, plus how to stay warm and dry in even the most hostile of weather conditions!

We will take you through the various rucksacks, tents, sleeping mats, sleeping bags, stove systems and expedition food available on the market for either the solo backpacker or group of friends.

During our overnight you will benefit from our instructor’s years of experiences and leave with plenty of top tips. This course is run on a 1:6 ratio.

NEED TO KNOW

WHAT WILL I NEED

Glenmore Lodge has a large, and very comprehensive store of up to date clothing and equipment. For this course, we don’t expect you to have all your own camping equipment and you’ll be able to borrow a tent, sleeping bag & mat, stove, and other essentials from our Stores. Or you’re welcome to bring your own if you’d like to try it out.

YOU WILL NEED (Glenmore Lodge can provide if required)

  • Waterproof jackets and trouser
  • Insulated synthetic jacket
  • Appropriate footwear for the attended course
  • Gaiters
  • 40lt rucksack
  • Walking poles
  • Expedition kit (tent, sleeping bag & mat, stove etc.)

 EQUIPMENT YOU NEED TO BRING WHICH WE DO NOT HAVE IN THE STORES

  • Personal clothing
  • Warm outdoor wear
  • Insulating layers
  • Trekking / climbing trousers (not cotton)
  • Hat & gloves
  • Whistle
  • Compass – Silva type 4 recommended with a 1:40,000 romer
  • Waterproof map case
  • Rucksack liner (or sturdy bin liner) / dry bags
  •  Hydration system (water bottle)
  • Box or bag for packed lunch
  • Personal first aid kit
  •  Personal toiletries & medications (towels are provided)
  • Suncream, sunglasses & sun hat
  • Midge repellent
