Overview

As well as consolidation of existing navigation knowledge, we aim to develop compass work and relocation skills. We will also have the chance to visit digital mapping and how this can be used in conjunction with map and compass. This course is the perfect step on from the ‘Discover Navigation’ course and can be added on to make a two day course. Introduces compass work, taking & following a bearing, route choice and relocating yourself when lost.

DETAILED INFO

PRE-REQUISITES

For anyone who has had some basic navigation experience or wants to be reminded of compass skills often learnt in the dim and distant past.  Or completion of an introduction to navigation course such as our one day Discover Navigation

IS IT FOR ME?

This one day course is well suited to anyone who has had some basic navigation experience or wants to be reminded of compass skills often learnt in the dim and distant past. It is about gaining confidence with a compass so the focus is on a steady progression from map setting to checking the direction of line features to taking and walking on a bearing across open ground. This course will equip participants with the skills required for poor weather and detailed navigation in the UK hills.

CONTENT

After some initial training and a recap of basic navigational skills, we’ll likely head up to higher ground to continue our learning with a journey on the mountain.

Other navigation strategies come into play such as the use of “attack points”, “aiming off”, recognising and using “catching features” and simple relocation strategies.

We will use a mixture of 1:50,000, 1:25,000 maps and Ordnance Survey and Harveys Maps (1:40,000). All of these are available to borrow from our Stores.

Our one day course start at 09.00, so please aim to arrive by 08.30 so teaching time is not lost. Packed lunches will need to collected,  flasks can be filled in our dining room and stores will be open from 08.30. The day will finish around 16.30 – 17.00 with a review of the day and tea and cake.
