Find Out MoreIf you dream of winter days spent in the UK’s mountains, with the crunch of snow underfoot and the confidence to do an ascent of Striding Edge on Helvellyn or CMD Arete on Ben Nevis, or one of the many other amazing mountain journeys to be had in the UK, but don’t have any winter experience, consider this 2 day course. Unlike climbing, mountaineering may use the rope to protect short sections of a journey or to help descend steeper ground. We’ll start our journey into steeper ground on day 1, looking at movement skills and making the most of our axe and crampons before coming back to the Lodge and introducing the rope ready to learn some new techniques in the mountains the following day. These two days are structured in a progressive way, allowing you to take part without having to have much prior winter experience.
To provide an experience of what winter mountaineering can be, moving over and through inspiring terrain
Some summer hillwalking.
Consolidate your winter skills and progress onto steeper terrain on our 2 day Winter Mountaineering course.
Day 1 – A refresh of movement, avalanche awareness, and general winter considerations. This would ideally take place in some steeper but manageable ground such as Ciste Gully area or toe of the Fiacaill Ridge or similar. No ropes on the hill, but we’ll return to Glenmore Lodge in time for an introduction to the use of ropes before dinner. Harnesses would be optional depending on future ambitions
Day 2 – A journey to a suitable venue where rope skills can be taught and practiced. Again, snow anchors and/or rock anchors as appropriate for the group and conditions.
