This course looks at the skills needed to safely paddle grade 3(4) rivers and to deal with problems as they arise.
It’s also a pre-requisite for Advanced White Water Leader and Advanced canoe White Water Leader.
This two-day training course sets you up to have enjoyable, safe days out on grade 3(4) rivers.
We’ll look at groups, suitable kit, emergencies, chase boating, bank-based rescues (including use of chest harness), moving around on steep ground dealing with stuck boats, stuck people, and injured people.
Confident paddling your craft in a grade 3(4) environment.
Confident swimming in your paddling gear.
If you want the skills to deal with – or better still to avoid – common problems on grade 3(4) rivers then this 2-day course is the one for you.
This two day course is for kayakers, OC1s and open canoeists who want to avoid and deal with problems on grade 3(4) white water. If you’re looking to take part in the course in a trad open canoe, please email us before booking.
We’ll spend both days on grade 3(4) rivers. We’ll look at river running, matching your group with the environment and how we cater for different paddlers with different aims and skill levels.
We’ll look at how to avoid problems by choosing appropriate strategies to paddle or portage, when and how to protect rapids, and what kit to carry. We’ll spend time exploring what to do when things do go wrong, looking at chase boating, bank-based rescues (including use of chest harness), moving around on steep ground, dealing with stuck boats, stuck people and injured people. We’ll use scenarios to put what you’ve learnt into practice.
