Would you like to venture onto steeper, more technical ground during your winter adventures? Or maybe you’d like to tackle a particular ridge but lack experience on ‘scrambling’ ground in winter conditions? With this course you’ll learn how to manage this type of terrain, and unlock new winter mountaineering adventures. We’ll build on your existing winter skills to introduce you to the skills you need to take on winter ‘scrambling’ up to grade I/II on Britain’s mountains.
To introduce you to the technical skills to tackle winter ‘scrambling’ type terrain, up to grade I/II on Britain’s mountains.
You should have good solid core winter movement skills, and be comfortable with the use of an ice axe and crampons in ascent and descent. Summer scrambling experience is also useful.
Develop your winter skills and progress onto steeper terrain on this 2-day Winter Mountaineering course.
Day 1 – Whilst journeying on the hill we will look at core movement skills, learning how to use your winter mountaineering boots, crampons, and ice axe to travel safely on graded (I/II) mountaineering terrain. We’ll also look at avalanche awareness for winter mountaineering, navigation, general winter mountain safety and emergency procedures. This course also includes use of a climbing harness and rope.
Day 2 – We’ll continue to further develop your skills from day 1, and consider route planning, late back procedures, emergency ropework including constructing and using snow anchors and abseiling. Throughout the weekend we’ll make use of our fantastic local hills to learn these skills and build your confidence.
The programme is fairly flexible, taking into account individual needs and aims, weather, and conditions etc.
