On this classroom-based course we’ll look at the techniques you’ll need to plan advanced trips, including strong tidal flow or open crossings.
This course is a pre-requisite for the BC Advanced Sea Kayak Leader Award, as well as being suitable for any sea kayaker planning more advanced trips.

BC Coastal Navigation and Tidal Planning Course (or equivalent e.g. RYA Basic Navigation or Day Skipper).
We typically run the Open Water Navigation and Tidal Planning course the day after a Coastal Navigation and Tidal Planning course, so you have the option to do both courses back-to-back.
This one-day classroom-based course is designed for all sea kayakers who want to develop their knowledge and skills in more advanced environments.
This one day, classroom-based theory course builds on the content of the BC Coastal Navigation and Tidal Planning Course.
We’ll look at weather, tides, navigation, buoyage and lights. We’ll plan at least a couple of journeys with open crossings and points where the tide moves faster that we can paddle; the sort of places where it really matters that we get our predictions right!
It’s also a pre-requisite for the BC Advanced Sea Kayak Leader assessment.
