If you’re working towards your Canoe White Water Leader and want to develop your skills then this optional training course is the one for you.
This course is all about meeting your development needs. We’ll look at the paddling, leadership and rescue skills required to lead groups of open canoeists on grade 2(3) rivers.
We’ll make sure you’ll leave the course with a detailed picture of the assessment standard, a development plan to get you to that level and a firm grasp of what the assessment will involve.

AIMS
To help you work towards your British Canoeing Canoe White Water Leader, which qualifies you to lead open canoes on grade 2(3) rivers.
PRE-REQUISITES
Experience paddling open canoes on grade 2 rivers.

CONTENT
We’ll look at all the skills required to lead groups of open canoeists on grade 2(3) rivers. This will involve lining and poling as well as paddling. We’ll cover different ways to support or challenge paddlers and to involve them in the decision making.
We’ll also take a good look at the technical skills required to manoeuvre our canoes on grade 2/3 rapids. That includes understanding how paddle side affects our angles, choosing whether or not to switch sides, accelerating the boat, improving our correction strokes and choosing when to go faster and when to go slower than the water.
We’ll also take a look at dealing with incidents and rescues.
