Find Out MoreGet ready for winter. Are you a summer walker keen to keep heading out in the winter, but not sure if you’ve got all the knowledge you need? Would you know how to deal with an emergency, or to navigate in winter conditions? If you are heading to Scotland, North Wales or the Lake Disctrict for some winter hill days, are you keen to build up awareness of avalanche and how to travel safely in the winter hills? Or possibly you’ve already learnt winter skills, but feel a bit rusty. This is a winter preparation weekend, aimed at helping you achieve those winter plans, be that a walk in wintry conditions, to accessing your climbing hitlist, but safely!
Over 2 days we’ll cover all those key areas of a winter hill day which can be the undoing of anyone once we encounter a bit of winter. Like a winter safety check, you are auditing your knowledge and refreshing your skills before heading out on winter adventures. We can guarantee good Scottish weather for these weekends, the perfect terrain and conditions in which to learn, away from your usual familiar walks. Snow we can’t guarantee, but with our resources and great staff, learning and fun we can!
To get the most out of the course we recommend that you have summer hill walking experience and have a level of fitness that will allow you to undertake two consecutive days on the hill. Winter hill walking is arduous so a good level of fitness will allow you to cope with what at times can be harsh and physically demanding conditions

Map information – we encourage everyone on mountain courses to have a map covering the Northern Cairngorms with a 10km radius from the ski area. There are now a range of scales and maps available OS 1:50,000, OS 1:25,000 and Harvey Map 1:40,000. For non-qualification courses any scale is fine, OS 1:50,000 map sheet 36 covers the widest area, but the Harvey 1:40,000 has a lot of additional information on the back of it, however it is useful to have the Silva Mark 4 compass with the 1:40,000 scale on it.. If you have digital mapping and can print off map sheets a suggested area would be: NW corner NH8514 NE corner NJ0314 SW corner NN8593 SE corner NO0393
