Overview

If you aspire to experience Scotland’s ultimate classic mountain scrambles, such as Curved Ridge on the Buachaille Etive Mor in Glencoe, or Tower Ridge on Ben Nevis, located in the dramatic Lochaber landscape, then this 3 day trip is ideal. You will develop a broad range of scrambling skills, whilst tackling some superb routes and is ideal if you only have limited time.

AIMS

This course is a guided experience to help develop a broad range of scrambling skills whilst tackling scrambling routes in Glencoe & Ben Nevis.

PRE-REQUISITES

To get the most out of this course you need to have previous hill walking (at least 10 days), additionally some previous scrambling/climbing experience would be useful. As mountaineering around Glen Coe and Ben Nevis involves a lot of ascending you will need to have a good level of fitness that will allow you to do consecutive 8 – 9 hour days involving over 900m of ascent over rough terrain.

IS IT FOR ME?

The course is a guided experience (ratio 1:2) ascending some of the classic scrambles around Glen Coe and Ben Nevis. A great opportunity to ascend scrambling routes that you don’t feel confident enough to do on your own.

CONTENT

The West Coast location allows us easy access to superb scrambles, such as Curved Ridge on the Buachaille or Tower Ridge on Ben Nevis, located in the dramatic landscape of the Lochaber area. Whilst enjoying a Guided experience, we will also weave into the day:

  • Developing movement skills in scrambling
  • Ascending quality scrambling routes whilst developing safe and confident movement over rocky terrain.
  • Route choice and route finding .
  • Interpreting the use of a guide book & map.
  • Interpreting weather forecasts to plan scrambling days out.
  • Emergency rope work.

This course is non residential and you will need to arrange your own accommodation and packed lunches.  We recommend that you book accommodation in the Fort William / Glen Coe area.

NEED TO KNOW

WHAT WILL I NEED

Glenmore Lodge has a large, and very comprehensive store of up to date clothing and equipment. Although we can supply all the equipment you will need, at this level you are encouraged to use your own hill gear including emergency gear, tent, stove etc. (Your instructor will of course want to check that personal equipment is appropriate for the activity).

YOU WILL NEED (Glenmore Lodge can provide if required)

  • Waterproof jackets and trouser
  • Insulated synthetic jacket
  • Appropriate footwear for the attended course
  • Gaiters
  • Helmet
  • 40lt rucksack
  • Climbing Harnesses
  • Walking poles

 

 EQUIPMENT YOU NEED TO BRING WHICH WE DO NOT HAVE IN THE STORES

Listed here are the essentials, this is not an exhaustive list.

  • Personal clothing
  • Warm outdoor wear
  • Insulating layers
  • Trekking / climbing trousers (not cotton)
  • Hat & gloves***  leather palmed Belay Gloves are useful for rope work scenarios.
  • Whistle
  • Compass – Silva type 4 recommended with a 1:40,000 romer ***
  • Waterproof map case (maps and map cases are not a stores item but can be purchased from our shop)
  • Rucksack liner (or sturdy bin liner) / dry bags
  •  Hydration system (water bottle)***
  • Box or bag for packed lunch
  • Personal first aid kit
  •  Personal toiletries & medications (towels are provided)
  • Suncream & sun hat

 

Glenmore Lodge will provide any technical equipment required on a skills course e.g. climbing ropes and racks.
