Do you wish you had the confidence to head out for a day in the hills, comfortable with your map reading and navigation abilities? This weekend course is designed to help you learn the fundamental skills of navigation, map setting, interpreting scales, contours, and keeping track of where you are.
We use a range of maps and exercises to demystify the subject and build your confidence to navigate independently when out exploring the hills.
This course is delivered in British Sign Language (BSL)
We’ll aim to cover all the core techniques required for confident and efficient navigation in the hills, in summer conditions.
No previous mountain or navigation experiences needed, though some experience of summer hillwalking and being familiar with an Ordnance Survey (OS) map would be useful. You should have fitness for a day of hillwalking.
There is no need for any previous experience, just a desire to learn the skills that will take you into the hills for independent adventures. This course is delivered in British Sign Language, and is intended to enable those with hearing impairments or users of BSL to learn the essentials of navigation.
On day one, we’ll likely spend most of our time around Glenmore Lodge’s grounds and the local area, where we can use a variety of maps and build up the basics of map setting, following a route, and using a compass. This will give opportunities to learn skills such as taking bearings, and using timing and pacing to help you track your progress.
On day two, we’ll likely head up to higher ground to continue our learning with a journey on the mountain. Other navigation strategies may come into play, such as the use of ‘attack points’, ‘aiming off’, recognising and using ‘catching features’, and simple relocation strategies.
Ultimately the content of the course will aim to satisfy the aspirations of the group, and will be adaptable to the conditions we encounter.
