DETAILED INFO

AIMS

On this course we’ll work on the skills that you need to safely paddle grade 4 rivers.

We hope you’ll leave the course feeling confident to paddle similar rivers as part of a group of competent paddlers.

PRE-REQUISITES

Very comfortable on Grade 3 with some experience of Grade 4.

At least 10 days paddling at grade 3/4.

A reliable roll.

IS IT FOR ME?

If you want a week kayaking down grade 4 rivers, with plenty of opportunity to develop your white water paddling, this is the course for you.

CONTENT

During this 5 day course we’ll look to spend our time paddling grade 4 sections of river. Depending on levels, the Findhorn, Roy, Spean, Pattack, Garry and Moriston are all possibilities.

Out on the water we’ll focus on your personal paddling skills for steeper rivers; boofs, flares and keeping the boat flat to the water rather than flat to the horizon. Because things happen quickly in these environments, we’ll most likely use video to help you link what you felt with how you moved. We’ll also look at safe river running strategies for harder rivers, getting the whole group involved in protecting rapids. We’ll also have the opportunity to take a look at ropework for dealing with problems in more challenging terrain. In the evening you have the option to practice your rolling in the pool.
