DETAILED INFO

AIMS

To get out in the wind on open water and develop your skills and confidence in the environment.

PRE-REQUISITES

At least 10 days open canoeing.

At least 5 days on open water in force 3 or above.

IS IT FOR ME?

This course is geared for the canoeist who is starting to get to grips with open water paddling. To get the most out of this course then you should have experienced open water lochs in slightly windier conditions, and be keen to develop your knowledge and skills.

CONTENT

On this 5 day course we’ll look at handling canoes on open water. Loch Morlich, Insh, Pityoulish, Laggan and Lochindorb are all within easy driving distance; or if conditions permit we could head down to the Moray coast and paddle on the sea.

When weather conditions allow, we’ll seek out force 3-4 winds. That’ll allow us to really feel the effect of wind on our canoes. We’ll look for combinations of trim and paddling side that allow us to use the wind to steer our boats. Sails also allow us to harness the wind; we’ll have the opportunity to use solo and tandem sails and perhaps look at rafted sailing.

Whatever the weather, we’ll be able to look at increasing the efficiency of our paddle strokes, and using edge and trim to make the hull work for us. We can also take a look at poling, tracking and open water rescues.

We hope you’ll leave the course feeling confident to plan and paddle your own canoe trips on open water.
