The kayak roll is a complex skill and a key goal for so many white water kayakers. This course goes beyond the foundation of our 2-day rolling clinic, and is designed for those who have a semi-consistent roll in the pool that works some of the time and are looking to develop a more solid and dependable roll both indoors and outdoors.
This 5-day course is not a block of repetitive practice in the pool! It is a comprehensive overview of the kayak roll, which we will then apply and practice both indoor (pool) and outdoor (loch and river) environments, with plenty of time to learn and develop
To work towards developing a solid and dependable roll for white water kayaking.
You will leave (at least) with a clear action plan of how best to continue your development towards a reliable and dependable white water roll. You will have a clearer idea about what you are trying to achieve and how best to practice, based on strong technical foundations.
You should already have done some kayak roll practice in the pool, and ideally have a semi-consistent roll in the pool.
You will have been on a few easy white water kayak river trips before (grade 1-2) and be keen to develop your kayak roll in this environment.
After meeting your Instructor and discussing your experience and aspirations, the first morning of the course will likely be spent in the pool, looking at the fundamentals of the kayak roll and setting some individual goals. The afternoon may then involve going to Loch Morlich to look at how we can use the outdoor environment to develop water confidence, and try our roll in this context too.
From there, the rest of the course will use a mix of venues depending on the weather, conditions, water levels and the group. Time will be spread between our indoor rolling pool, nearby Loch Morlich, and gentle sections of the River Spey. At least one of the days may also be spent on grade 2 white water (e.g. Knockando on the River Spey), or perhaps a full river trip.
We will really get to grips with the key movement patterns required and align them with the other movement patterns we use on the river. Good forwards paddling, turning strokes, rotational movement whilst moving around the river – all of these link to a good a dependable kayak roll in ways that we’ll look at in detail. We’ll also spend time building water confidence outdoors on both the loch and river, and look at what you can do individually to strengthen and condition your core muscle groups with a wider variety of exercises you can do at home.
