Overview

If you’re working towards your Advanced Canoe Open Water Leader and want to develop your skills then this optional training course is the one for you.

This course is all about meeting your development needs. We’ll look at the paddling, leadership and rescue skills required to lead groups of open canoeists on journeys in open water with winds in excess of force 4 and more than 500m from the shore.

We’ll make sure you’ll leave the course with a detailed picture of the assessment standard, a development plan to get you to that level and a firm grasp of what the assessment will involve.

IS IT FOR ME?

If you’re working towards your Advanced Canoe Open Water Leader and would appreciate some additional input then this optional training course is for you.

Take a good look at the skills checklist and assessment guidance, which can be found at www.britishcanoeingawarding.org.uk

The Leadership and Raft Guide awards course guide is also well worth reading.

CONTENT

On this optional training course we’ll look at skills required to lead groups of open canoeists on lochs in winds above force 4 (or on the sea with winds up to force 4 and up to 2 knots of tidal flow). This will include sailing, rafting, poling and tracking as well all the paddling skills and tactics required to manoeuvre in advanced conditions. Conditions permitting we’ll head out one evening to look at navigating and leading a group in the dark.

We’ll think about leadership; ways to balance the ability of the group and the demands of the environment, supporting them when they find it hard and adding in challenge if it’s too easy. We’ll also consider what to do if it all goes wrong, rescuing both individual canoes and rafts.
