This MTB leader’s award is built around core aspects of leadership in the outdoors and focuses on everything you will need to know to start your journey leading groups and riders in the terrain appropriate for the award. The award is terrain specific (this refers to the ability of your group, the distance from help and the type of trail being ridden primarily). The award is valid all year round, however, it is not for leading and riding in ‘winter’ conditions. Once registered with British Cycling, book on a course with us and enjoy two great practical days that explore a wide variety of topics.

CONTENT

The course covers a wide variety of topics including:

  • Defining L2 Leadership terrain and remit.
  • Planning and delivery of rides that are appropriate for your group.
  • Leading techniques for effective group management.
  • Map reading and navigation for a flowing journey.
  • Management of accidents and emergency situations.
  • Equipment set-up and trailside repairs.
  • Core mountain bike techniques.

To register with British Cycling, visit http://www.britishcycling.org.uk/mtbleadership

As a guide a practical assessment will follow after a consolidation period of approximately six weeks minimum. The award must be completed within 18 months of completing the training.

To get the most out of the two days it is important to be comfortable in your gear and with your equipment. Therefore, it is always best to have your own and have used it before coming along on a course. You’ll get a better fit maybe, but definitely you’ll get to choose the colour. However, there may be some items that you don’t have or maybe you wish to try something else. In that eventuality we have a well kitted out Stores facility. Listed here are the essentials; this is not an exhaustive list though. Should you be missing something then some of the items below are also available in stores if needs be.

If you do not have your own bike or are unable to bring it with you to the Lodge, we have a limited fleet of Trek bikes available for use. Please get in touch to arrange this prior to your course. E-bikes can be ridden on any of our qualification courses provided this has been discussed prior to attendance and approved by the course instructor.
