This online course is for sea kayakers who have already planned and undertaken coastal journeys before, and are looking to develop the skills to plan more ambitious journeys in more complex tidal environments, which will include open crossings. This will include looking at: how we construct and utilise tidal vectors for open crossings, how we use more detailed weather and tidal resources for more complex and exposed environments with faster tidal waters, along with how we use electronic navigation aids.
Prior to the course you will be sent a pack of resources which you will work through with your Instructor during and between the online sessions. Your Instructor will contact you to complete a ‘resource order form’ prior to the course, so you have everything you need for the various exercises.
You will need to purchase a Portland Course Plotter and a pair of dividers prior to the course, in order to work through the open crossing exercises.
The course will be delivered through 4 two-hour live sessions delivered via Microsoft Teams, which will take place on a weekly basis. In between these sessions, participants will also have access to slides and materials, so they can review the learning in their own time and at their own pace. There will also be additional planning tasks to complete between the sessions, to help consolidate your learning, as well as the ability to contact your Instructor with any questions you might have.
This course takes place from 7-9.00 pm over four Monday evenings: 13th January, 20th January, 27th January, 3rd February
This is a British Canoeing Awarding Body certificated course, and participants will need to attend all 4 sessions in the series to gain the certificate. It is a pre-requisite for those looking to undertake the Advanced Sea Kayak Leader Award.
The aim of this course is to ensure all participants are armed with the knowledge to plan more advanced sea kayak journeys in more complex tidal environments, and more exposed locations which include open crossings in tidal waters. This course is appropriate for sea kayakers who have already planned and undertaken plenty of coastal journeys, and are looking to build on their existing knowledge and planning skills to plan for paddles in more committing and complex waters.
You should already have completed the Coastal Navigation & Tidal Planning (CNTP) course, or RYA Day Skipper equivalent, and have the skills of planning coastal journeys in tidal waters well practiced, as well as be familiar with how to find weather forecasts and tidal predictions. If you are unsure whether the course is right for you, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
This course is for you if you have already planned and undertaken plenty of coastal journeys before, and are well practiced and familiar with tidal predictions, maps and charts and marine weather; and are looking to expand your knowledge to plan journeys in more complex tidal environments with open crossings.
