This online course is for any paddler of any craft (sea kayak, SUP, sit on top kayak, open canoe, packraft etc.) who either already undertakes, or aspires to embark upon coastal journeys and wants to access the knowledge, planning and decision making skills, that will allow you to have safer and more enjoyable adventures and experiences on the sea.
The course will be delivered through 4 x 2 hour live sessions delivered via Microsoft TEAMS, which will take place on a weekly basis. In between these sessions, participants will also have access to slides and materials, so they can review the learning in their own time and at their own pace. There will also be worksheets and additional planning tasks available to consolidate further in between the sessions, as well as the ability to contact your instructor with any questions you might have, should you need further support.
This is a British Canoeing Awarding Body certificated course, and participants will need to attend all 4 sessions in the series.
Participants will require access to: a good internet connection which will support a session on Microsoft TEAMS, a quiet space for the sessions themselves, pen, paper, ruler/straight edge and a basic calculator. Additional resources will also be sent through to you by email prior to the session.

The aim of the course is to ensure all participants are armed with the knowledge to confidently plan and undertake safer and more enjoyable journeys on the sea. This highly inclusive course is appropriate for those paddlers who are starting out and want to gain the knowledge and planning skills for their first coastal journey, or indeed those who have completed some journeys already and looking to develop and consolidate their planning skills.
This course is also a pre-requisite for the BCAB Sea Kayak Leader and SUP Coastal Leader awards, which we also provide.
There are no pre-requisites for this course.

Content will include:
How to interpret weather forecasts and tidal predications, introduction to maps and charts for navigation – along with lots of supported trip planning practice, step by step. The aim will be for all participants to leave the course feeling inspired and confident to plan their own safe and enjoyable coastal trips. This course is also a pre-requisite for the BCAB Sea Kayak Leader and SUP Coastal Leader awards.
