Is It For Me?

Is It For Me?

This five day course is aimed at those who are looking to develop their rock climbing experience whilst enjoying the rich variety of rock climbing, found in the Central Highlands. As such it is ideal for novices and those who are active indoor wall climbers but have little experience of climbing outside. You don’t have to have any previous experience of rock climbing although being fit and active would be advantageous.

Days one and two are run on a one instructor to four participants (1:4) ratio. This then lowers to an one instructor to two participants (1:2) ratio for day 3,4,5 This allows the course to be very competitively priced whilst ensuring that the quality and safety is still incredibly high.

Course Aims

To develop participants core rock climbing skills such as to be a competent second on a variety of rock climbs, both single and multi-pitch.

Course Content

You will usually be in a team of two with one instructor. Meeting your instructor on the first morning provides an opportunity to discuss you and the other participants experience and aspirations, enabling the instructor to plan the program around the main topics to be covered. These are:

  • Developing participants personal experience on a variety of rock types.
  • Experience different disciplines of rock climbing such as bouldering, sport & trad climbing.
  • Develop an ability to second rock climbs, .
  • Technical sessions will include efficient rope management including tying into anchor points.
  • Belaying both leader and second.
  • Coaching in personal climbing movement skills, climbing technique and psychological preparation.
  • Descending from rock climbs by abseiling using self-protection methods.
  • For the last 3 days of our course the ratio drops from 1:4 to 1:2. This will allows more personalised coaching and the ability to explore more challenging terrain.

A really excellent all-round introduction to rock climbing and the rope work I need to know for my trip, which is going to be a bit more than a hike/scramble.
Very enjoyable indeed, and helped of course by the incredible 5 days of unbroken sunshine!

I got a lot out of the course and had a really enjoyable week! I found it a great 'kick-start' in traditional rock climbing and now feel I know enough about the basics and have enough confidence to go out and continue learning together with friends who have more experience than I do. The quality of the course was very high and the content each day was well tailored. The lodge provides a great setting and the food and service was grand.
