Is It For Me?

This one day course is well suited to anyone who has had some basic navigation experience or wants to be reminded of compass skills often learnt in the dim and distant past. It is about gaining confidence with a compass so the focus is on a steady progression from map setting to checking the direction of line features to taking and walking on a bearing across open ground.

The course is designed to follow on from the one day introduction to navigation skills and can be combined with that day or on some weekends with the more advanced course on relocation skills.

This course will equip participants with the skills required for poor weather and detailed navigation in the UK hills.

Course Aims

As well as consolidation of existing knowledge we aim to develop compass work and relocating skills. This course is the perfect step on from the ‘Discover navigation’ course and can be added on to make a two day course. Introduces compass work, taking & following a bearing, route choice and relocating yourself when lost.

Course Content

You will usually be in a group of no more than 6 with one instructor. The day is mainly outdoors in the local forest learning the key compass skills through some fun exercises.

The day progresses with map in hand around the local area. The skills are built up, how to take a bearing from the map, applying that to different circumstances, following the compass on a bearing, keeping moving in a straight line, measuring the distance on the map and on the ground.

Other navigation strategies come into play such as the use of “attack points”, “aiming off”, recognising and using “catching features” and simple relocation strategies.

We have a 1:5,000 map of the local forest around the centre, this is excellent for teaching and having fun with navigation skills. It provides lots of opportunity to practice before transferring the techniques to the bigger hill environment which we aim to do in the afternoon.

Our one day course start at 09.00, if you could aim to arrive by 0830 so teaching time is not lost.  Packed Lunches will need to collected,  flasks can be filled in our dining room and stores will be open from 08.30. The day will finish around 16.30 – 17.00 with a review of the day and tea and cake.

What Will I Need?

Glenmore Lodge has a large, and very comprehensive store of up to date clothing and equipment. You are welcome to use your own equipment and pick and choose odd items from the store. Your instructor will want to check that personal equipment is appropriate for the activity.

GLENMORE LODGE CAN SUPPLY:

  • Waterproof jackets and trousers
  • Leather Boots
  • Gaiters
  • Helmets
  • Day Sac

Equipment you need to bring which we do not have in stores:

Listed here are the essentials, this is not an exhaustive list.

  • Informal clothing for leisure wear
  • Warm outdoor wear
  • Insulating layers – at least one mid weight and one warm fleece layer
  • General trekking trousers are recommended, not jeans though.
  • Thick socks.
  • Spare fleece/insulated jacket
  • Hat & gloves***
  • Whistle
  • Compass – Silva type 4 recommended ***
  • Map information – we encourage everyone on mountain courses to have a map covering the Northern Cairngorms with a 10km radius from the ski area. There are now a range of scales and maps available OS 1:50,000, OS 1:25,000 and Harvey Map 1:40,000. For candidates on any NGB course such as Mountain Leader summer, you should have a 1:50,000 map and ideally one other scale. For non qualification courses any scale is fine, OS 1:50,000 map sheet 36 covers the widest area, but the Harvey 1:40,000 has a lot of additional information on the back of it, however it is useful to have the Silva Mark 4 compass with the 1:40,000 scale on it, (only available since 2010).

If you have digital mapping and can print off map sheets a suggested area would be:

NW corner NH8514         NE corner NJ0314

SW corner NN8593          SE corner NO0393

That will be about 4 sheets of A4 if you use the 1:50,000 scale.

From time to time we will use other areas outside the northern Cairngorms in which case we will supply appropriate mapping.

  • All maps need to be in a waterproof case. Maps and map cases are not a stores item but can be purchased from our shop.
  • Rucksack liner (or sturdy bin liner) / dry bags
  • Vacuum Flask & Water Bottle ***
  • Box or bag for packed lunch.
  • Blister kit/ small first aid kit
  • Suncream – you just never know! ***

Items marked *** are available in our shop subject to availability.

Very good and would strongly recommend people do this immediately after the intro course. This course lets you consolidate skills you learned the previous day and also lets you learn new ones. I think people who only attended the improvers' course missed out.

This is a very useful follow on from Intro To Navigation. Jess was a very informed and patient instructor, taking time to make sure that everyone understood each stage of each task. Everything was taught clearly and supportively. The afternoon on the hill gave us the chance to practise the various procedures in a safe environment. I definitely recommend this course. And the cake was a bonus!

Did the course straight on after the intro to navigation course the day before and that worked really well. A good mixture of being able to practice skills learnt and build on them but so much that was too much to take on.
Got to try the chocolate Guinness cake and loved it!

Really useful and informative course. Mick was a brilliant instructor, really enthusiastic and gave us a number of practical exercises to help put the basics of navigation into practice and commit them to memory. By the end of the day I felt confident that I could use a compass when out walking and could navigate better using the contour lines on a map.

Can't praise Monty highly enough! He's knowledgeable and patient, felt he took time to listen to all of us but also covered everything we wanted to know (and more!) without rushing. Feel so much more confident now on my own in the hills and I know the proper technical terminology, fantastic course!

The course was excellent and well pitched for me. The instructor was friendly, pleasant, interested, knowledgeable, interesting and encouraging. The outdoor element of the course was cleverly put together to provide good practical experience. The arrangements at Glenmore Lodge are great, with the opportunity to borrow equipment, a packed lunch provided, and a selection of tea and coffee, and cake at the end of the day. A good day.
