Cairngorm Bikepacking Adventure

Overview

Come and experience a world class bike packing trip right here in the Scottish Cairngorms! The topography of the Cairngorms is some of the most bikepacking friendly that there is, taking you through spectacular mountainous terrain with comparatively little height gain. We will operate as a completely independent group carrying all our equipment and food.

This is a non-residential course.

AIMS

We will make a rough circumnavigation of the main Cairngorm plateau adding in or taking out various options as conditions/the group dictates.  We have a well stocked stores including bike packing bags from Revelate designs and wild camping equipment for you to use if you wish.

PRE-REQUISITES

You will be need to be a regular cyclist capable of spending three days in the saddle with regular breaks to enjoy the views. If you have any concerns or would like to talk through your experience with our team before booking, please contact us on [email protected] 

IS IT FOR ME?

This course is perfectly geared towards anyone looking to undertake and enjoy multi day trips on their bike. You may wish to travel solo, as part of a group of mates or even part of an organised group, whatever or wherever, this course will show you all there is to know to have a fun, safe and ultimately rewarding adventure

CONTENT

This is a trip and a course all rolled in to one. Enjoy an amazing journey through some of the best biking terrain in Scotland – and maybe the world?!

We will be self-sufficient throughout, journeying on great trails geared towards your level of skill and experience.

We will explore how best to plan a multi-day adventure by exploring everything from what equipment to take (and what not to take!) to how to carry this equipment. How to ride the bike fully laden, what to eat and drink and more importantly where to go.

Breaking this down a bit more topics covered will include:

Navigation – simple tips to let you feel confident to explore

Trailside repairs – suitable for wilder adventures.

Nutrition and fluids – top tips on what works and how to avoid problems.

What equipment is needed – for safe and successful adventures at home and abroad.

Some simple riding skills – to stop common trailside issues happening

What to do if something should go wrong – First Aid and beyond

Bike Set up – for your comfort and again to stop potential issues whilst out riding

Places to explore – great advice from the tutor’s past experiences

Going overseas – again, learn from experience

On top of this there will also be many kilometres of great riding to enjoy.

NEED TO KNOW

WHAT WILL I NEED

If you do not have your own bike or are unable to bring it with you to the Lodge, we have a limited fleet of Trek bikes available for use. Please get in touch to arrange this prior to your course. E-bikes can also be ridden on any of our skills courses.

  • Small bike lights front and rear – always a good idea to carry just in case!
  • Spare inner tube x2 for your bike
  • Spare Brake pads x2 for your bike
  • Spare Rear Gear Mechanism hanger for your bike – Call your local bike shop for help with this
  • Small Trail Toolkit – Pump, multi tool and chain breaker at least
  • Small Biking Day pack – 25L max
  • Bike packing bags
  • Emergency survival bag
  • Helmet
  • Eye wear
  • Thin woolly hat or buff for under helmet
  • Gloves – thin, full finger cycling gloves are perfect
  • Warmer Cycle friendly Full finger Gloves – just in case its cold
  • Water proof jacket & trousers – Suitable for cycling
  • Padded cycling Shorts – there really are worth it for comfort!
  • Outer Baggy Cycling Shorts
  • Thin fleece or similar
  • Full leg covering – for cold days e.g. cycle tights or cycling leg warmers
  • Warm outdoor wear
  • Insulating layers – a variety of base layers are useful to control your temperature
  • Personal toiletries & medications
  • Smidge and a midge net!
  • Suncream – you just never know!
  • Small personal first aid kit
  • Drink system – hydration pack / water bottle
  • Head torch
  • Whistle
