Is It For Me?

This course is aimed at anybody who is keen to develop the skills to kayak white water rivers. To get the most out of this course then you should be water confident, but there is no requirement to have been in a kayak before. As part of the learning process getting wet and capsizing is inevitable, so come prepared for a bit of getting wet as well as a lot of fun and learning. If you want a week with plenty of opportunity to learn to paddle whitewater and develop skills to have confidence on Grade 2, then this is the course for you.

Course Aims

This course will provide the paddler with plenty of experience of paddling a variety of Grade 1 and 2 rivers. In addition to this the week will focus on safe river running strategies, white water safety and rescue as well as of course developing your personal paddling skills for white water. Getting solid white water kayaking foundations skills from our top coaches will ensure a lifetime of white water adventures – there is no better way to start.

Course Content

You will usually be in a group of no more than six with one instructor. Meeting your instructor on the first morning provides an opportunity to discuss people’s experience and aspirations, which along with the weather forecast and water levels will enable us to plan the week’s activity with you.

Day one we will help you sort out any boats or paddling gear you need to borrow from us. Then we will make use of our local loch, Grade 1 river section and pool to start learning the essential skills and develop your confidence in the environment. For the rest of the week we will paddle the rivers that offer us the best water and are at the appropriate grade for the group’s needs. This will include plenty of rivers with Grade 1 and 2, with options for harder if all goes well. The week could involve the following rivers: Spey, Ness, Findhorn, Tay and Avon.

Whilst on these rivers we will be able to spend time coaching and developing your personal paddling, there may be an opportunity for video coaching as well. In addition to this we will be looking at developing your safe river running skills to help you leave the course feeling confident to safely paddle a similar grade of river with friends. As part of this white water safety and rescue is essential, there will be an opportunity to look at a variety of aspects of this during the week as well, as is needed.

Glenmore Lodge has a purpose made kayak rolling pool. This will be available for use every evening, so during the week we can help you start to develop a roll, which is a essential skill for any white water paddler.

In addition to this you will benefit from your instructor’s wealth of knowledge of additional white water paddling venues around the UK, and more than likely the rest of the world.

Stories will be told and hopefully you will leave inspired and with knowledge to confidently take your paddling to other parts of the UK and beyond.

I have L1 and 3* sea but have never done white water. Unsure if this was the course for me I phoned and after a lengthy discussion was told it probably was. I have to say whoever I spoke to was absolutely spot on with her understanding of skills I already had and those I would need to get me where I wanted to be. Enthusiastic and professional staff in all areas who were always happy to help. Thank you Glenmore staff. You are what makes the learning fun. I will definitely be back.

To the Glenmore team,

Just a quick message to say thank you for such a fanstastic week.

Everything about the lodge including the facility, accommodation, equipment and food was excellent.

We would also like to say a special thank you to Iain our instructor who was first class. His knowledge, experience, support, organisation, encouragement and enthusiasm helped us all to have great fun, great memories and a fabulous time (he even arranged sunny weather!)

Thanks again - we'll be back.

Didn't use the accommodation, though I will next time!
Really excellent course, pitched at just the right level for me. Ian is a skilled instructor with an infectious enthusiasm for the outdoors (and bagpipes). Gear and food were high quality. Don't change a thing! Sure I'll be back for another course in the future. Many thanks, Scott.

The course at Glenmore Lodge was fantastic. The instructors Giles and Fi were both great and really helped the group improve our level of paddling over the course of the week. The progression of skills and rivers used was spot on. I personally got more than I had expected out of the course and it has really helped me to kickstart my paddling on whitewater, and I am feeling much more confident in the kayak. The staff in general were great and very friendly, and the gear store was stocked with great gear to use. The food was really good and there was plenty of it (the coffee and cake was a great way to end the day). The facilities were great and it is in a fantastic part of the world. What's not to like? I'll be back for another course. Thanks!
