Cairngorms Trail Running Gathering

An easy journey from any major UK airport will open up the Cairngorms, Scotland’s growing centre of trail running.  Home to incredible trails of all lengths and abilities.  Forested trails, rugged tracks, hilly ridges and everything in-between.

Join the Cairngorms Trail Running weekend, held at Scotland’s National Outdoor Training Centre, Glenmore Lodge, and you’ll have 2 days to get to grips with nutrition, night running & navigation, hear athlete talks, get your hands on gear to test, explore and enjoy a mixture of runs – you choose the length!  Residential and non-residential options available.

This is a trail running weekend, but you don’t need to be an athlete to enjoy this. Come alone or with friends and spend the weekend with like-minded people, who all share the same passion and interests as yourself.

As we head into Winter, this weekend will leave you with the knowledge to keep on running safely throughout the winter months and hit the next Spring ready take on your next event or challenge.


Trail Running Community

We’re being joined by our friends at Inov 8, Leki, Petzl, Ellis Brigham and La Sportiva.  Over the weekend, you’ll have the chance to try footwear, running poles and head torches, included for free as part of your package.

We are also being joined by Inov 8 athlete, Ben Mounsey and Leki athlete, Simon Tams, who will both be on hand for some post dinner inspiring talks on Saturday night.



Our Location

Glenmore Lodge is 10 minutes from Aviemore train station.

Travel to Aviemore from Inverness Airport (45 minutes), or Edinburgh airport (2 hours drive).

You’ll meet like minded people and enjoy a weekend improving your trail and hill running skills.


Course Aims

The aim of the weekend is to provide a series of educational and inspirational workshops and runs to suit all participants.  We want to keep you running through the Winter and gaining the confidence to run at night.

Course Content

The following is an example of the workshops on offer:

Trail / Hill Run A run which can be as much ‘fun’ as you wish.  There will be a variety of runs to choose from. The aim is to introduce a warm up routine and discuss themes which could include: environment, equipment, tactics, techniques, physiology and psychology
Developing Physical Robustness A practical introduction to run related training concepts which include key body weight exercises and routines geared to strengthen hip, knee and ankle function and overall body stability
The Terrain Game Short coach sessions on ascending, descending, traversing, running narrow twisty paths, dealing with tricky terrain eg wet/dry rocks, boulder fields, steep grass and crossing water without bridges
Fast and Light Get the micro scales out! Take a look at lightweight kit concepts and how to lighten your own wardrobe
Running Safely Planning and preparing for a run and what to do if it all goes wrong. This session will include a simple planning tool and the use of commonly carried emergency equipment, whistle, torch, blizzard bag, spare clothing, map, compass, phone and first aid kit. The session will also utilise some real life situations to highlight the need for preparedness
Technology (bring your own!) Have a heart rate monitor but don’t really use it? Have GPS but not explored it beyond getting a position? This session will look at your aids to training and a chance to share ideas of ways to get more out of them.  But make sure to bring your own along!
Navigation We will provide some top tips on navigation skills for people on the move.  We will cover map setting, quick bearings at junctions and how to find your location along the trail.  Mobile phone map apps, gps and map information for emergencies.  If you have a compass, bring it along, we will supply maps

All The Gear and Plenty of Idea

With specialists from Ellis Brigham (all equipment things running), inov-8® (running shoes) and Leki (poles) there will be plenty of opportunities for gear chats and demonstrations.  Inov 8, Leki, Petzl and La Sportiva will join us, making this a unique gathering of gear for you to try out over the weekend.

Staff working on this weekend include resident runner Giles Trussell, Senior Instructor at Glenmore Lodge; Johannes Petersen Associate Instructor and Mountain Navigation coach; Ian Stewart Associate Instructor; Martin Bell – Ellis Brigham Aviemore Manager and UTMB CCC finisher.



What Will I Need?

Please bring personal running kit which should include

  • Running shoes
  • Socks
  • Buff
  • Gloves
  • Waterproof
  • Windproof
  • Tops and leggings
  • Small rucksack/bumbag
  • Personal wash kit (for residential guests)

Course Pre-Requisites

The ability to run about 10km.

There will be a range of routes to suit all abilities.

No specific trail running or hill running  experience necessary.

  • Shuttle bus to Glenmore Lodge (departs Aviemore station 5:20pm on Friday and Sundays)

What’s included if you choose the residential option – As above PLUS

  • Bed in shared en-suite room – available from 3pm on day before your course starts *

(Single rooms may be available for a supplementary charge, please ask at reception when you arrive)

  • Breakfast
  • Dinner for each course day (except one day and back-to-back courses)
  • Use of the facilities at Glenmore Lodge
  • Linen is provided along with a towel, you may wish to bring an extra towel if you would like to use the facilities or are on a paddlesport course

Arriving at Glenmore Lodge

  • Your first inclusive meal is breakfast (7:45 -8:30am) An evening meal is not provided on your arrival night, but bar meals are available in our Lochain bar 5pm to 9pm (5-7pm on Mondays and Tuesdays)
  • Packed lunches are collected at breakfast
  • There will be a welcome talk at 8.30am. The daily programme of your course will be discussed with your instructor when you first meet, taking into account aspirations and prevailing weather conditions.

On your last day

  • Check out time is 10am on the final day of your booking, we have changing areas, showers and left luggage facilities on site
  • All courses will finish by 5pm
  • On Fridays and Sundays we offer a drop off to Aviemore station, leaving Glenmore Lodge at 5pm, please contact us at least 24 hours in advance if you would like to book this service
