Velotech Mechanics Gold

Qualification Level - 2 days | Prices from £390.00

This award is the natural step up from Silver Velotech and looks at problem solving common issues on bikes which will often lead to removing and replacing of components and systems found on a wide range of cycles.

The successful candidate will then be accredited to identify, adjust and if needed replace many common components and systems found on cycles. They will also be able to true wheels and problem solve common issues found with wheels.

It builds on the knowledge and process of both Silver and Bronze award levels. To enjoy the two days and also be successful it is really important to be comfortable and practised with all aspects of those awards.

Is It For Me?

There are two main angles to look at this course –

  • Are you looking to work as a cycle mechanic as work?
  • Are you looking to gain great professional development to supplement your existing qualifications in cycling?

If the above fits then this course is the way to go. It more than fills the gaps in your knowledge to enable you to fully maintain most cycle components and systems except suspension and hydraulics.

It is ideal for:

  • experienced bike mechanics who are supervising the ongoing maintenance of a fleet of bikes,
  • those that want to work in a Bike shop as a mechanic
  • enthusiastic bikers looking to work on their own bikes
  • MTB Leaders / Coaches looking to formalise their knowledge and certify them to work on clients bikes

Course Aims

As always there is a relaxed tone to the process building to an assessment task on the second day and a multiple choice question paper to complete the accreditation process.

The aim is that you leave as an accredited Gold Velotech award holder.

Course Content

This course is run in conjunction with Velotech Cycling and follows their syllabus and requirements.

The course covers a wide variety of topics including:

  • Moving from recreational practices to professional standards.
  • Workshop etiquette
  • Workshop safety
  • Health and Safety considerations
  • British Standards requirements
  • Recording your work

We then look specifically at

  • Fault finding
  • Collecting information on new and varied components
  • All aspects of stripping, servicing, replacing and ensuring serviceability of all the components on the bike
  • Wheels

We do not look at the aspects of the Silver award other than to assess competence – we just don’t have time for any training in these. Please ensure you are up to speed with all these elements before attending the course.

The Gold award also does not look at Suspension systems i.e. fork internals and rear shocks. These are manufacturer specific and fall outside the scope of the award.

What Will I Need?

We have a purpose built teaching workshop ready for your course. This is equipped with all that is needed to facilitate all aspects of the syllabus.

We can also supply all PPE for you including workshop aprons, gloves and barrier cream.

We also supply all consumables needed to coach and assess you through the process.

However, we do not carry a workshop of components with which to service your own bike. We aim to work on bikes supplied by us. These bikes will enable us to work through all the key principles and systems required.

By all means bring your own bike along but be content that you may not work directly on it.

Course documentation

You can find our Velotech Manual at https://www.glenmorelodge.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Gold-Course-Manual.pdf
