Rocking in the North West Highlands

Situated on the north west coast of Scotland are Mountains and sea lochs Rivaling the Fjord lands of Norway. Encrusted with rock, it is a climbers dream. This is a guided week aiming to sample some great climbs in amazing locations. Whether you are topping out with the archipelago of the Summer isles in view or questing up a towering sea stack or mountain crag, there is an endless supply of unforgettable adventures to be had. Expect to have sore fingers by the end of the week!

Is It For Me?

If you want to explore the North West Highlands and the climbing it has to offer then this is the course.

The first day you and your instructor will discuss your aspirations for the week and come up with an itinerary. We will often look at introducing some personal climbing skills and coaching on the first day to prepare us for the for the rest of the course.

Some of the venues we might choose to use are the sea cliffs of Reiff, the mountain crags of Stac Pollaidh, the road side cliffs of Ardmair.

Course Aims

The aim of the week is to get as much climbing mileage as possible whilst being guided by an instructor who has first hand in depth knowledge of rock climbing in the North West. Areas that will covered are;

  • Developing your FUNdamental movement skills
  • Climbing on a variety of different rock types and rock features
  • Developing your ability of various climbing techniques
  • Ropework skills and abseiling
  • Interpreting & understanding the use of the guidebook
  • Interpreting the weather forecast and where to climb.

Course Content

We meet on the Sunday afternoon 16.00 hrs at Glenmore Lodge. This allows us to sort out equipment, pack, have a bar meal at 17.00. After meal we will drive to our accommodation and base for the week at Altandu (self-catered B/fast lunch, evening meals at local bar), overlooking the Summer Isles. If it is easier for you to travel direct please arrive by 22.00 hrs when we aim to be there by. You will need to let us know if this is your plan and we can help out with any additional directions and any equipment you may need to borrow from us. The evening is spent sampling a wee dram o’ whisky (depending on your tipple!) with the rugged landscape of the Summer Isles in view!

What Will I Need?

Glenmore Lodge has a large and very comprehensive store of up to date clothing and equipment. You are welcome to use your own equipment and pick and choose odd items from the store. Your instructor will want to check that personal equipment is appropriate for the activity.

If you are thinking about buying equipment but are not too sure what to get we would advise you to come and try our equipment and then make your purchases after the course. We have a range of most equipment items you can try during the course and there is advice on hand from other students as well as the staff.

GLENMORE LODGE CAN SUPPLY:

  • Waterproof jackets and trousers
  • Rock shoes
  • Helmet
  • Harness
  • Rucksack
  • All technical climbing equipment kit including ropes.

EQUIPMENT YOU NEED TO BRING WHICH WE DO NOT HAVE IN THE STORES.

Listed here are the essentials, this is not an exhaustive list.

  • Informal clothing for leisure wear
  • Warm outdoor wear
  • Insulating layers – at least one mid weight and one warm fleece layer
  • General trekking trousers are recommended, not jeans though.
  • Socks
  • Spare fleece/insulated jacket
  • Hat & gloves
  • Rucksack liner (or sturdy bin liner) / dry bags
  • Vacuum Flask & Water Bottle ***
  • Box or bag for packed lunch.
  • Blister kit/ small first aid kit
  • Personal toiletries & medications (towels are provided)
  • Suncream – you just never know! ***
  • Spare towel
  • An alarm clock

Glenmore Lodge also has a pool, gym & climbing wall – so don’t forget your swimming/gym/climbing kit!

Course Pre-Requisites

 

It is required that you have experience in comfortably climbing outdoors at a minimum British tech grade 4c and /or F6a indoors. Experience in climbing on a variety of different terrain types is useful e.g. corners, slabs and face climbs.
