Climbing Wall Award Assessment

A one day assessment following the training course and a consolidation period. Course content will include:

  • Personal Climbing Skills and Background Knowledge
  • Lead climbing on minimum Fr4 grade
  • Knowledge of safety chain
  • Climbing History and ethics
  • The Climbing wall environment
  • Equipment, anchors and belay techniques
  • Planning, organising and managing sessions
  • Group supervision and management
  • Basic problem solving

Is It For Me?

  • You must be registered on the CWA scheme (independently of the ML or SPA scheme registration) and possess the relevant CWA log book.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • You must also have attended a CWA Training course or have exemption from training.
  • Have gained the relevant further experience (see Climbing Wall Award Handbook).
  • Hold a valid First Aid Certificate.

Course Content

Candidates are requested to plan and deliver to your peers two teaching sessions prior to the assessment around the themes outlined below:

  1. A five minute warm up session involving climbing or non climbing exercises.
  2. A fifteen minute session coaching ‘movement skills’. This can be done by verbal explanations, games (both climbing and non climbing) and climbing, non climbing exercises. The important thing to remember is the session must focus on the principle movement skill being coached E.G. centre of balance, edging with the boot etc.

You will be asked to deliver each session with your peers on the day of assessment.

Home Theory Paper

The home paper is linked at the bottom of this page. It is a home study paper and should be completed and brought along to your assessment.

PLEASE NOTE: If you book this course on a residential basis, no dinner is included. If you would like to have a 3 course dinner in our dining room ( £15), please call our office to book. Alternatively, our bar offers great meals but check the times as they vary by season and day of the week.


What Will I Need?

Glenmore Lodge has a large, and very comprehensive store of up to date clothing and equipment. You are welcome to use your own equipment and pick and choose odd items from the store. Your instructor will want to check that personal equipment is appropriate for the activity. Glenmore Lodge will supply all ropes.

We have a range of most equipment items you can try during the course and there is advice on hand from other students as well as the staff.

  • All emergency group kit including ropes.

  • Informal clothing for leisure wear
  • Warm outdoor wear
  • General trekking trousers are recommended, not jeans though.
  • Spare fleece/insulated jacket
  • Rucksack liner (or sturdy bin liner) / dry bags
  • Vacuum Flask & Water Bottle ***
  • Box or bag for packed lunch.
  • Blister kit/ small first aid kit
  • Personal toiletries & medications (towels are provided)
  • Suncream – you just never know! ***

  • An alarm clock

Remember the price is all inclusive

We want our customers to easily know what their course will cost, up front and in the open. Accommodation on the night before and the nights during your course, pick up from the train station (Friday and Sunday evenings only), breakfast, lunch, cake break and dinner are all included. All transportation on the course, centre facilities & any equipment you borrow are also part of the package.

Course Documentation

Course Pre-Requisites

Registration on the CWA scheme, be at least 18 years of age, have attended a CWA Training course, gained the relevant log book experience, hold a valid First Aid Certificate.

(Single rooms may be available for a supplementary charge, please ask at reception when you arrive)

  • Use of the facilities at Glenmore Lodge
  • Linen is provided along with a towel, you may wish to bring an extra towel if you would like to use the facilities or are on a paddlesport course

Arriving at Glenmore Lodge

  • Your first inclusive meal is breakfast (7:45 -8:30am) An evening meal is not provided on your arrival night, but bar meals are available in our Lochain bar 5pm to 9pm (5-7pm on Mondays and Tuesdays)
  • Packed lunches are collected at breakfast
  • On Mondays and Saturdays only there will be a 10 minute welcome talk at 8.15am, on other days you will meet your instructor at 9am. The daily programme of your course will be discussed with your instructor when you first meet, taking into account aspirations and prevailing weather conditions

On your last day

  • Check out time is 10am on the final day of your booking, we have changing areas, showers and left luggage facilities on site
  • All courses will finish by 5pm
  • On Fridays and Sundays we offer a drop off to Aviemore station, leaving Glenmore Lodge at 5pm, please contact us at least 24 hours in advance if you would like to book this service
