International Mountain Leader - Winter Assessment (Instruction Only)

The course is based in the Bavarian Alps and assess’s the skills required to lead and manage a group under your supervision in winter in the ‘middle mountain’ (rolling Nordic type terrain) environment. To attend this course you MUST have already completed a IML summer assessment and winter training course (or gained exemption from MTUK)

Please note this course is Non-Residential.  You will need to arrange your own accommodation around Oberjoch in Bavaria. The course will be run from the Berghaus Iseler in Oberjoch.

The instructors will be staying in the Mattlihaus KG.  If you wish to stay at the same venue, they have kindly offered us a special rate of; (2018 prices)

Is It For Me?

Course Aims

You should be familiar with the syllabus and guidance notes contained in the International Mountain Leader Award Handbook provided by MTUK.

Course Content

The program is viewed in conjunction with the MTS Guidance Notes & Prospectus and Syllabus. Although the course is divided, with certain days concentrating on specific aspects, the assessment looks at your overall performance over 5 days. It is not viewed as a modular type of assessment.

Insurance

You MUST have proof of insurance for the duration of the course for personal accident, rescue and repatriation. You should also have a European Health Insurance Card (please note they have an expiry date).

The Venue

The assessment team will meet you at 9am on the morning of the first day at the Berghaus Iseler in Oberjoch.

Travel

This part of the Bavarian Alps is easily accessible by train from Munich airport in little over 2-3 hours. Consider the research and planning required to get to the venue as part of your IML development!

Research Required

Please prepare prior to your arrival two 10 minute interactive and practical presentations that can take place on the hill on a topic that relates to the IML award.

Leaders Resource Pack

Each candidate must produce a Leaders Resource Pack which details relevant information for them operating as a leader in the area of assessment. It should include information that would assist the leading of a group in the assessment area, such as transport information, hut information, emergency information and environmental facts relating to the area. This should be in a format that allows it to be carried during the assessment.

What Will I Need?

For attending the course you need to be fully equipped with suitable winter clothing, boots and equipment for several continuous days on the hill. The following list of equipment is essential for attending the course:

  • Snow Shoes and trekking poles
  • Transceiver, snow shovel and probe (min 2.4m in length)
  • Ski Goggles and sun glasses
  • Ice axe
  • 120cm sling & 2 screw gate karabiners
  • 30m mountain leader rope
  • Some form of digital mapping i.e. GPS or phone mapping
  • DAV Alpenvereinskarte Bayerische Alpen BY3&4 Allgauer Voralpen Ost (Map) plus digital mapping
