Hill Skills

Skills Taster Sessions for 12 - 16-year olds

Would you like to have a go at an adventure sport without committing to a longer course or spending lots of money on new kit you might never use? Throughout July and August, 12 - 16 year olds can try a variety of adventure sports - climbing, kayaking, mountain biking and orienteering - at Glenmore Lodge, sportscotland's national outdoor training centre.

Our situation at the heart of the Cairngorms National Park plus our on-site training facilities make Glenmore Lodge the ideal venue for learning adventure sports. Along with our climbing wall and indoor paddle-sport pool, we have limitless trails for mountain biking and orienteering on our doorstep.

And as Scotland's national outdoor training centre we set the highest standards for quality of instruction, equipment and safety.

Each session is half a day (2.5 hours, except hill skills which lasts the full day) and you can choose to take part in a single session or combine sessions to make up one or two day courses.

Places for these taster sessions are limited so advance booking is recommended. However, you can also check for last minute availability.

Inspiring adventure

Mountain Biking - skills course to include front/back wheel lifts, roll offs, balance skills etc. Nobody lives far from where mountain biking is possible. You can play in the garden, the street, in the park, forests and of course the mountains. This will teach you how to 'play' and find all sorts of reasons to jump on a bike.

Orienteering - a hugely popular sport on foot, bike or skis. There is an immense world of orienteering out there with events and competitions all the time. This session will focus on the art of navigation around a classic course on foot with top tips and instruction on how to do it at speed.

Kayaking - This session will help you decide if you like being in a kayak and are happy going upside down and how it feels to paddle. Watch what the instructor does under the water, while watching through specially designed viewing window. Great learning environment. Scotland has a fantastic selection of rivers waiting for you.

Hill Skills - we all live in one of the most beautiful places in the world for mountains. Can we use them? Yes if we know how. This session is a full day on what and how to be safe on a hill day. It will include, introduction to navigation, what to put in your rucksack, time in a bothy, weather and so on. A must do for any budding mountain goats out there. Please note this is a full day not two separate half day sessions.
