How Do We Choose Our Sponsors?

As a National Centre, we are in a situation to be pretty picky about whom we invite to be a sponsor. They need to fulfil a few criteria before we are happy to be associated with them. Among other things they need to be ethical. By this we mean care about the environment and people that use it. Making money is important but the outdoors industry has customers that love the environment and some of the best behaviours in people are seen when they are out there. So, in real terms, if they are not ethical in how they produce and sell their equipment, they are not in harmony with the outdoors or Glenmore Lodge.

The other important factor is quality. Our instructors need to use the best equipment possible. The Scottish weather as well as heavy usage will put all their kit through its paces. No instructor would use kit that was not built to last and function well in the conditions they work in. Another benefit of choosing quality as a key criteria is that our students get the opportunity to learn and develop their chosen sport using the best equipment from our stores and therefore optimise on their learning experience.

Product testing is a great way to develop kit. Our instructors work alongside some of our sponsor design teams to make sure that as technology grows and ideas change, their kit moves with the times and of course anticipates the future.

Pyranha is not just another canoe and kayak company. In 1976, a small group of British paddlers collected a trailer load of cutting edge fibreglass boats from our factory in England, loaded a few more on the roof of their van, drove them 7500 miles to Mount Everest and paddled them down the first descent of the Dudh Kosi. Since then, we’ve stayed at the cutting edge of white water paddling. We’ve built a global group of paddlers like the team at Glenmore Lodge . Their feedback helps shape our boats. Way back in 1965, Ben Lyon, aided by engineer brother Graham, started making caving ladders. The name 'Lyon Ladders' was registered in 1973. In the same year Ben, with Mike Meredith, took a party of cavers to France, and called in on Fernand Petzl's 3-man workshop. Mike started imports to the UK, handing on to Ben's business in 1974, making 'Lyon' the first overseas Petzl distributor. The next move was to change our name to Lyon Equipment.
