Join us for a weekend of walking, great food and great company whilst enjoying our unique area. This is a more guided than instructional course perfect for those just taking their first steps in a winter environment. Also perfect for those wanting more of a holiday feel.
Introduces core techniques required to move about the mountains in winter. Although prevailing conditions will decide the key focus, techniques covered will generally include use of axe and crampons; basic winter navigation; basic avalanche and weather awareness.
Develop an in-depth practical knowledge of all the skills required to move about the mountains in winter competently and confidently. Poor visibility nav & route choice; ice axe & crampons; emergency procedures; avalanche and weather awareness; equipment advice.
For those with solid practical grounding in winter skills (i.e. can competently use an axe and crampons, navigate using a map and compass), and are looking to take these skills to the next level. Night/whiteout nav; snow shelters; survival skills; avalanche awareness.
Perfect for those making the transition from summer to winter. Route planning, contour interpretation, pacing and timing are essential skills for safe travel in winter.
With more of a workshop approach we will help you to refresh and update your existing skills.
Introduces core techniques to tackle winter 'scrambling' type terrain, up to Grade I on Britain's mountains. Introduces use of axe and crampons for ascending and descending steep ground; snow anchors and associated belaying skills. Please note: This is not a winter climbing course.
Develop in-depth practical knowledge of all winter skills required to tackle scrambling terrain. Covers ice axe and crampon skills for ascending steep ground; use of snow and natural rock anchors; navigation, avalanche awareness and route finding. NB: Is not a winter climbing course.
Starts in the Cairngorms then heads west, allows you to develop technical skills to tackle adventurous winter scrambling routes, up to Grade I/II on Britain's mountains. Focused on ascents of classic west coast winter terrain and ridges. NB: Is not a winter climbing course.
Introduces you to the core winter climbing techniques, whilst seconding a variety of winter climbs, such that you will be a competent and reliable second.
Develop an in-depth practical knowledge of all the winter climbing skills required to second a variety of winter climbs at Grade II+. Having five days allows more time on climbing techniques for a variety of winter climb types including steep snow/ice/mixed.
Develop the technical skills required to lead winter climbs confidently and competently. Covers constructing belays, movement techniques; leading strategies & abseiling from multi-pitch climbs.
Coaching in winter climbing techniques whilst gaining maximum climbing mileage and experience on a variety of types of winter climb as dictated by prevailing conditions. Please note: This is not a learn to lead course.
Ben Nevis is a unique venue. Its height and variety of climbs provide a superb opportunity to develop skills such as climbing techniques for both mixed and ice routes. The course is based at the CIC Hut at the base of Tower Ridge
Practical and intensive course combining avalanche awareness and evaluation training with your existing navigational skills. Helps to better inform route choice and decision making in the winter hills. Scheduled so you can combine it with other short courses either side of the day.
Practical course developing knowledge and skills in order to improve avalanche awareness and the risk assessment process, including safe travel techniques and use of our avalanche transceiver training park simulating rescue of a buried victim. Suitable for skiers / boarders.
